The purpose of the Geology Course at IGc-USP is to train professionals with broad knowledge in different specialties, which include: mineralogy (basic and industrial), petrology (igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary and ore), sedimentology and stratigraphy, structural and tectonic geology, geochemistry, paleontology, geological cartography, environmental studies, petroleum geology, geotechnics, metallogeny, geotechnologies, geoprocessing, remote sensing, geophysics, geoconservation, genesis, exploration, assessment and management of mineral, energy and water resources, and more recently, in data science and artificial intelligence. In addition, the IGc-USP is concerned with training professionals engaged in teaching and research in Geosciences, in order to have become a national center for training researchers and university professors.

Professionals trained at IGc-USP are able to understand geological processes, their interactions and dynamics, as well as the application of these concepts in the resolution of technical-scientific problems, socioeconomic factors, management of natural resources, as well as assessing the influence of human activity on the environment and the mitigation of the effects caused by the contamination of soils, sediments, surface waters and underground, as well as those derived from the use and occupation of the soil. Recently, this has been incorporated into capacity, handling a large volume of information through data science, in addition to the concern in bringing geological knowledge closer to society, focusing on the SDGs, circular economy, supply of mineral commodities for low carbon energy transition, hydrological impacts of changes climate change, industry and mining 4.0, etc.
