The Graduate Program in Dentistry – Periodontics was created in 1998, initially with the Master's Course in Periodontics, as a need of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology at FORP-USP to train professionals for teaching and research in area of Periodontics. The program evolved and the Surgery area was created.

In the search for improvement, the professors carried out post-doctoral internships abroad, establishing important contacts and bringing new technologies. Greater teacher training leveraged funding from FAPESP and CNPq, which made it possible to structure research laboratories, initially for cell culture and mineralized tissue sections.

In this process, the consolidation of the program was the result of a collective project by the Department that lasted almost a decade, involving the aggregation and qualification of professors, as well as fundraising for the creation of research infrastructure. Furthermore, this trajectory was enriched by international partnerships, collaborations in research projects with centers of excellence at the Universities of Basel (Switzerland), Giessen (Germany), Gothenburg (Sweden), Michigan and Washington (USA), Chieti , in Pescara (Italy), and with the International Academic Agreement between USP and the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.
