The Institute of Physics at USP offers stricto sensu master's and doctoral courses that train qualified professionals to work in the most diverse areas of physics in multi and interdisciplinary areas.

Our postgraduate graduates are prepared to seek, formulate and solve physics problems in different areas of knowledge, including non-academic sectors. Our alumni work in universities and research centers in the country and abroad, as well as in industrial, business and health sectors. The training offered to graduate students seeks to develop reasoning, creativity and intellectual flexibility so that they can deal with the evolution of knowledge areas and actively participate in the generation of knowledge and technological innovation.

The graduate program in physics at IFUSP is one of the pioneers in the country; was officially created in 1970, but had already awarded doctors since the end of the 1940s. Since its official implementation, postgraduate studies at IFUSP have formed a significant number of professionals in physics: around 1439 masters and 1020 doctors (data from 2017).

With around 111 advisors and 280 students (as of early 2018), the IFUSP postgraduate program has an extraordinary thematic diversity, which makes it unique in the Brazilian academic scenario. The research activities carried out in our postgraduate courses cover diverse areas, ranging from cosmology to biophysics, from environmental physics to materials science. Almost all areas of our branch of science are covered: nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, optics, biophysics, atomic and molecular physics, mathematical physics, plasma physics, cosmology, particles and fields, statistical mechanics, applied physics and instrumentation, etc.

IFUSP has an excellent infrastructure for the development of research work by professors and graduate students. Modern and well-equipped laboratories, extensive and up-to-date information technology resources and one of the best scientific libraries in the country are some of the facilities offered to those who carry out their postgraduate studies here.
