The Graduate Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo (IAG/USP) was implemented in 1973. One of the first to appear in the country in the area, it was the result of the initiative of a group of Brazilian researchers recently graduated abroad.

Traditionally, the course has the largest number of students (approximately 60) and advisors (approximately 30) and has been responsible for training most astronomy professionals in the country.

Integrated into the academic environment of USP, the course receives graduate students, mainly from the Institutes of Physics and Mathematics, with whom it exchanges experiences in teaching and research management.
