The Graduate Program in Biology of the Host-Pathogen Relationship, headquartered at the Department of Parasitology of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICB-USP), has been considered of excellence by CAPES since 2001. Its objective is to offer training comprehensive in three main lines of research (LPs): LP1: Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Cellular Biology of parasites and vectors; LP2: Epidemiology of infectious and parasitic diseases; LP3: Immunology of infectious and parasitic diseases.

The program emphasizes the study of contemporary aspects of the interaction between parasites and their vertebrate hosts and vectors, for the training of masters and doctors capable of carrying out teaching and research activities in the country and abroad, surpassing the traditional boundaries between classic disciplines such as Parasitology, Microbiology, Immunology and Public Health. It offers a flexible curriculum, which allows the student to take courses in the various excellence programs based on the main campus of USP, in São Paulo, as well as on other campuses of USP and other Brazilian universities. In addition, all the program's permanent advisors regularly offer disciplines in their areas of expertise. Consequently,

Students have full access to the laboratory infrastructure at ICB-USP, which includes specialized laboratories and large-scale equipment for common use, as well as vivariums for breeding and experimenting with animals and insectariums. It also has an important biological collection of human trypanosomatids and domestic and wild animals, the largest of its kind in the world. The program attracts a large number of students from all over Brazil and several Latin American countries; practically all of them are scholarship holders and dedicate themselves to their student activities full-time.
