The Graduate Program in Geochemistry and Geotectonics at the University of São Paulo is one of the most important centers for generating knowledge and training researchers in the field of Geosciences in Brazil. The Program's main feature is the involvement of master's and doctoral students in innovative research projects that result in high-impact production, with consequent training of academic leaders inserted in the international scientific panorama. This feature stems from the performance of a staff of notoriously qualified permanent advisors (21 CNPq productivity fellows, 12 of which are level 1), seven members of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, four members of the São Paulo Academy of Sciences and one member of the French Academy of Sciences ), expressive fundraising for research and a modern and diversified set of laboratories. Another outstanding characteristic of the Program is its great international insertion, characterized by a large proportion of foreign students (average of 19.4% in the 2010-2012 period), 36 cooperation agreements and projects with foreign institutions, frequent exchange of students and researchers and significant collaboration of the faculty in organizing events and editing international journals.

The Program's main objectives are the training of human resources and the generation and dissemination of technical-scientific knowledge in Geosciences, with a focus on training academic and technical leaders with a solid conceptual basis and a broad view of scientific issues and their applications. The Master's course aims to provide students with up-to-date methodological and theoretical training, as well as experience in the development of all stages of a research project, using the infrastructure available at the USP Institute of Geosciences. The Doctorate course aims to train researchers with experience in the development of innovative projects, with an original approach and inserted in the international effort to advance scientific knowledge. The projects developed in the Program emphasize themes related to Geotectonics.
