Since 2009, USP has offered a bachelor's degree in Biosystems Engineering, the first of its kind in Latin America. The course has 60 full-time vacancies and is taught at the Faculty of Animal Science and Food Engineering (FZEA/USP), at Campus Fernando Costa in Pirassununga.

Biosystems Engineering is a new area of knowledge that emerged due to the technological evolution of agricultural production processes. Currently, specialization in the agribusiness productive system is determined not only by the natural potential of a given region, but, to a large extent, by the aggregation of technology in production. Terms such as precision agriculture or precision animal husbandry were science fiction until the end of the last century and are now a reality in the Brazilian agricultural production sector.

The professional profile of the biosystems engineer finds a strong field of application in our country, as most of the technology in processes for technology-based agriculture and zootechnics is still imported, despite Brazil's position as a major producer and exporter of food. In Brazil, there are no Biosystems Engineering courses in operation and the offer of Agricultural Engineering courses is very limited. There are 23 institutions offering the course across the country, with only 12 public institutions. In the state of São Paulo, there are only two institutions (one public and one private).

It is worth noting, then, that in the intended and innovative profile of the Biosystems Engineering course, there is an emphasis on entrepreneurship, as it is believed that a dynamic of entrepreneurial training qualifies the professional for the world of work, awakening personal qualities that are a requirement for acceptance in the universe range of professional perspectives explained above.
