Over the last 80 years, study and research in Tropical Medicine have contributed to one of the most important declines in mortality rates in the world (in Brazil this rate has dropped from 50% to 5% in this period).

Despite this significant drop, many of these diseases are still present and active, requiring constant maintenance of these efforts, especially directed at the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of these pathologies. If before we acted to prevent death, today our focus is to guarantee the quality of life of populations and travelers.

Thus, current Tropical Medicine also encompasses aspects of International or Global Health, ensuring that products or people from a given region are not a focus of disease transmission; nor that its visitors are victims of local pathologies.

In this context, the Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMT) has been operating since its founding between 1959-1960. After 40 years of activity linked to the Faculty of Medicine - USP, it became a Specialized Institute of USP (IMT-USP), associating the integrative character of an IE at USP with the full expression of our main purposes, always focused on teaching, research and training specialists in the field of Tropical Diseases and International Health.
