The master's degree in nursing, Specialized Nursing Practice option allows you to enrich and deepen your clinical reasoning and acquire autonomy, leadership as well as medical knowledge to practice the 8 professional activities reserved for specialized nurse practitioners and nurse practitioners. specialists (IPS). The master's degree must be taken simultaneously with the complementary diploma in specialist nursing practice which offers 3 specializations: primary care, adult care and mental health. This training gives you access to the examination of the Order of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ) with a view to obtaining the IPS title.

In a collaborative practice with other health professionals, NPs are authorized to intervene beyond the scope of usual nursing practice. They use various intervention strategies to offer their clients comprehensive direct care in order to support and guide them. They are constantly called upon to make clinical judgments and decisions, which are based on advanced clinical knowledge. As consultants or educators, they share nursing knowledge, facilitate problem solving, and provide liaison and coordination mechanisms between professional staff and various service partners.

General eligibility conditions

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.0 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Accepted diploma: Baccalaureate, Bachelor; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate degree deemed equivalent.

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student for the Master of Science in Nursing, specialized nursing practice option, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • hold a bachelor's degree in nursing or equivalent
  • have obtained in the 1st cycle an average of at least 3.0 out of 4.3 (or the equivalent) or the average required by the original university for admission to a 2nd cycle program, if this is higher
  • be a member in good standing of the Order of Nurses of Quebec (OIIQ)
  • have acquired, as of March 1 of the current year, clinical experience of a minimum of 3360 hours, as a nurse, over the last 5 years. This clinical experience will have a minimum of 1680 hours related to the chosen option: Front-line care: CLSC, GMF, GMF-U, community clinic, CHSLD, and other settings where first contact care with the population is provided (emergency could be considered first line ) / Adult care: Hospital center, specialized adult clinic, emergency / Mental health: first, second or third line with mental health clients (elderly, adult or pediatric).
  • demonstrate experience working with an adult clientele for the Adult Care and Primary Care options.
