The master's degree in epidemiology is aimed at any future researcher, expert, wishing to apply epidemiological concepts and methods to health research, from a public health perspective aimed at improving the health of populations.. This is a rigorous training allowing you to master the design of epidemiological studies and biostatistical analysis methods, while benefiting from teaching in content epidemiology. Carrying out original research as part of a dissertation completes your learning.

Epidemiology consists of the study of the frequency and distribution of states or events relating to the health of specific populations, including the study of the determinants influencing these states, and the application of this knowledge to control the health problems. It is one of the cornerstones of research and action in public health and medicine. The concepts and tools of epidemiology enable research specialists to design and conduct methodologically, ethically, and practically appropriate studies.

Mastery of epidemiology concepts is essential to:

  • Monitoring the health status of the population
  • Identifying the determinants of diseases and health conditions
  • Design and interpretation of clinical studies
  • Promoting health and well-being

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Required diplomas and admission thresholds: Quebec

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.0 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Accepted diploma: Baccalaureate, Bachelor; duration of 3 years, or other undergraduate degree deemed equivalent.

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student for the master's degree in epidemiology, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies;
  • hold an undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or a degree deemed equivalent;
  • have obtained in the 1st cycle a cumulative average of at least 3.2 out of 4.3 or the equivalent;
  • have successfully completed the undergraduate course “STT 1700 – Introduction to Statistics” or its equivalent over the last 5 years, or have successfully completed the undergraduate course “STT 2974 – Biostatistics and Epidemiology”, or its equivalent before admission.
  • at the request of the admissions committee, appear for an interview
