The Department of Genetics and Animal Breeding is an active component of the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Science at the Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur-5200, Bangladesh. The areas like genetics, breeding, reproduction, molecular biology, biotechnology, and biometry constitute the discipline of Genetics and Animal Breeding. The Genetics and Animal Breeding expert utilizes individual differences and resemblances as a tool for breeding goals to meet selection targets. With the application of quantitative genetics and molecular genetics, a breeder aims to improve the performance of the next generations based on available pedigree and performance records.

The mission of this department is to conserve native animal genetic resources and enhance the reproductive & productive potential of farm animals through appropriate breeding plans and modernised  reproductive technologies. The department aims to impart education at undergraduate, MS, and Ph.D. levels and conduct research of basic and applied nature in genetics and animal breeding.

FAQs

There are a variety of academic, government, and industry career opportunities at the graduate level. Coursework in genetics and genomics opens you to a wide variety of career options at every degree level. Candidates with expertise in traditional quantitative breeding skills are in very high demand in both the plant and animal industries. Larger livestock operations may also employ animal breeders to manage their breeding programs. This might include some less conventional “livestock” industries including the breeding management of laboratory animals or zoo animals.
The department's advanced animal research facility and well-equipped laboratory serve as sites for practical instruction for undergraduate and graduate students. Future academics will also benefit from having access to the newest technologies in our modern facilities Animal Biotechnology Laboratory. Additionally, students may be given the chance to get involved in other research institutions, like BLRI, NIB, and different private organizations.
Students can apply for the National Scienceand Technology(NST) Fellowship. This grant is given to MS/MPhil, Ph. D., and post-doctoral students/researchers studying/researching in public universities/research institutes. Moreover, the department can also support students in projects managed by their academic advisers.
The department has offered a wide range of interesting courses, including Quantitative Genetics, Animal Reproduction, Computer Uses in Animal Breeding and Genetics, Artificial Insemination and Reproductive Biotechnology, Biometrics of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Molecular Genetics and Genetics Engineering, Advance Biostatistics, etc.
