General eligibility conditions

To be eligible as a regular student, the candidate must meet the general eligibility conditions (section XI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

To meet the Université de Montréal average of 3.3 out of 4.3, candidates from this province must meet the following requirements:

Conditions specific to this program

To be eligible as a regular student for the Doctorate in Literature, the candidate must:

  • meet the general eligibility conditions (section XXVI) of the Educational Regulations for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
  • have obtained, in the 2nd cycle, an average of at least 3.3 out of 4.3 or the equivalent
It must also meet the conditions specific to the chosen option

Options comparative and general literature and theory and epistemology of literature

  • hold a graduate degree in a field of literary studies
The candidate must have a good knowledge of at least three languages, including French and English, and two literatures. In some cases, knowledge of a fourth language may be required.

German studies option

  • hold a graduate degree in German studies with dissertation or provide proof of training considered equivalent
The candidate must have an excellent knowledge of German and a good knowledge of two other languages, including French. In some cases, knowledge of a fourth language may be required.

Hispanic studies option

  • hold a graduate degree in Hispanic studies with dissertation or provide proof of training deemed equivalent
The candidate must have excellent knowledge of Spanish and good knowledge of two other languages, including French. In some cases, knowledge of a fourth language may be required.

Literary and intermedial studies option

  • hold a graduate degree in cinema studies, literary studies, media studies or any other field deemed equivalent
The candidate must have a good knowledge of at least three languages, including French and English, and literature.

Digital humanities option

  • hold a graduate degree in literary studies or any other field deemed equivalent
The candidate must have a good knowledge of French and English, and literature.
