At the University of Paris, on the Saint Germain des Prés campus, the Language Sciences option (SDL) consists of two courses: Signs, discourse and society (SDS), a research-oriented course dating from 2014 and Expertise in semiology and communication (ESC), a professional course that has existed since 1992. The two courses have in Master 1 ¾ of the courses in common and ¼ of the courses are specific to the ESC course. In Master 2, courses take place from mid-September to mid-February, over 20 weeks face-to-face and are entirely dedicated to the Expertise in semiology and communication course.

The ESC master is intended for all students interested in the place of language – in the broad sense, including iconic, gestural, spatial signs, more broadly: non-verbal – in social and professional dynamics, which is not only the case for graduates in language sciences and, more generally, in human and social sciences (philosophy, history, sociology, etc.), in letters and languages and in communication, but also students from other backgrounds: communication, marketing, graphic designers, designer etc.

This academic program is part of the Graduate School Linguistics at Université Paris Cité, combining master's and doctoral courses with advanced research laboratories. The Graduate School takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of language, spanning theoretical, computational, historical, sociolinguistic, and psycholinguistic linguistics.
