This biology program is for students who have passion for understanding how cells and living organisms function, and enjoy scientific experimentation and field or laboratory studies, then students should consider majoring in biology. Biology is the study of living organisms (bacteria, algae, protozoans, fungi, plants, and animals). It is a large discipline that encompasses molecules and cells, organs and organ systems, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. Biologists study cell and molecular biology, genetics and evolution, organismal biology, systematics and ecology and behavior. Bachelor of Science in biological sciences students interested in botany, zoology, ecology and systematics, and cell and molecular biology who want to pursue careers in biology, including wildlife biology, fisheries biology, endangered species biology, work in nurseries, garden centers, and zoo or become natural resources managers should pursue the biology option. The environmental biology is a biology that specifically focuses on environmental issues. The interests of EVB majors cover a wide range of topics. Students in the program are interested in: natural resources management, pollution, ecology, ecotoxicology, conservation, renewable energy, wildlife rehabilitation and many, many other topics. Opportunities for EVB students: a) Research - Gain valuable hands-on experience and become engaged in the chosen field of study. The best students work with one or more faculty members and generate knowledge, not just learn it. Research experiences are key for those interested in graduate or professional schools. Students can also earn credit for their research and count it towards their degree. b) Composting - Following the work of one of the previous interns, EVB has partnered with the EIU office of sustainability to work towards composting organic wastes from EIU?s food services. C) Biofuels - For the last few semesters, have been converting used cooking oil from dining services into diesel fuel. The biodiesel truck and will be doing outreach to local schools in the near future. This is just a part of EIU?s commitment to renewable energy as the programs are also exploring fuels from algae and biomass. These efforts should continue to expand as the renewable energy center develops.
