The sociology, concerned with the systematic study of society and modeled after the natural sciences, has become one of humankind's major sources of self-awareness in the 21st century. Students in this program, have exposure to the fundamental research methods, theories, and concepts of the discipline and the opportunity to take elective coursework in substantive areas that complement their professional and academic interests. In addition, field trips, conferences and internship experiences extend education beyond the classroom. Students may also participate in extra-curricular activities such as the Sociology Club and Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honorary society. It provides a liberal arts education which develops an ability to think critically and analytically - abilities highly desirable to employers and widely marketable. Most graduates find careers in law enforcement, case and social service work, personnel relations, advocacy work and other public and private career settings. Sociology is also relevant for students planning to pursue graduate degrees in law, social work, counseling, criminal justice, business, public administration, sociology and other social sciences.
