Programme Aims

This pre-registration nursing programme provides a chance for Bachelor’s degree holders in any discipline to simultaneously earn a professional credential as a registered nurse, and an academic credential, namely, a Master’s degree. The programme prepares students for registration as Registered Nurses with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and to acquire the attributes to become future leaders in the profession. Its aims are as follows.

  1. To equip students for holistic care that encompasses safe, ethical, legal and culturally sensitive nursing therapeutics provided to clients of all ages and their families in various health care settings.
  2. To prepare students to acquire the attributes of future nurse leaders through the appraisal and translation of new knowledge in advancing nursing practice.

Our innovative approaches to learning and teaching enhance our students’ critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills, and our graduates are both leaders in the nursing profession and responsible global citizens. 

Our modern facilities include nursing therapeutics laboratories (equipped and furnished as virtual clinical wards with simulation laboratories and other new technologies), mental health nursing laboratories, the Yuen Yuen Institute Chinese Medicinal Nursing Laboratory, the Dorothy Wong Intensive Care Laboratory, Gerontological Nursing Laboratory, the Integrative Health Clinic, the Herbal Medicine Learning Centre, the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services, and the Yuen Yuen Institute Learning Resources Centre. 

Field practice is arranged in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, old age homes, day care centres and other community centres. We also offer a wide range of overseas student exchange programmes. To obtain balanced and comprehensive clinical experiences, students have opportunities to adapt to a variety of practicum locations, environments and rotating work schedules. 

A new Global Leadership Scheme is embedded in the programme which aims to nurture future nursing leaders with global vision. Students joining the scheme can apply the Global Leadership Scholarship to participate in oversea clinical attachment and other scholarly activities.

Admission requirements

In accordance with the University Regulations Governing Professional Master’s Degree Awards, the prerequisite for admission is the completion of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. To be eligible for registration with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, applicants are required to have satisfied the following in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, or the equivalent.

(a) The candidates must have a minimum of 5 subjects in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, or equivalent.

(b) The compulsory subjects required are:-

(i) English Language (Syllabus B) at Grade D or above, or English Language (Syllabus A) at Grade B, or English Language at Level 3;

(ii) Any one science subject from the following at Grade E or above;  Biology, Chemistry, Human Biology, Mathematics, Physics

(iii) Any two other subjects at Grade E (or Level 2 for Chinese Language) or above; Accommodation and Catering Services, Additional Mathematics, Biology, Buddhist Studies, Chemistry, Chinese History, Chinese Language, Chinese Literature, Commerce, Computer and Information Technology, Design and Technology, Design and Technology (Alternative Syllabus), Economics, Economics & Public Affairs, Electronics and Electricity, English Literature, French, Geography, Government and Public Affairs, Graphical Communication, History, Home Economics (Food, Home and Family), Human Biology, Integrated Humanities, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Putonghua, Religious Studies, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Visual Arts, Word Processing and Business Communication (English)

(iv) Any one other subject at Grade E or above.

(c) Any one of the subjects listed in (b)(i) to (b)(iii) must be at Grade C (or Level 3 for English Language or Chinese Language) or above.

For the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, applicants are required to have satisfied the following or the equivalent. The candidates must have a minimum of 5 subjects in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination, or equivalent, or any recognized qualification above. The 5 compulsory subjects required are:-

(a) 4 Core Subjects, with English Language and Chinese Language at Level 3 or above, Mathematics at Level 2 or above, and an attainment at “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development#; and

(b) 1 Elective Subject from Category A* – New Senior Secondary Subjects at Level 2 or above.

#For candidates who took Liberal Studies in 2023/24 or before, Level 2 or above in Liberal Studies will be regarded as “Attained” in Citizenship and Social Development.

Fluency in written English and Chinese, and in oral English and Cantonese.

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose.
