The Doctorate in "Philology and Criticism" is dedicated to the philological and literary study of the classical, medieval and modern European tradition.
The structure of the doctorate has been modified over time to allow for a path with a strong comparative approach. The initial nucleus was made up of the convergence between the European Research Doctorate School in "Romance Philology" and two sections of the Research Doctorate School in "Interpretation", a convergence founded on the common philological and comparative approach, and on the homogeneity of the cultural areas considered, starting from Italy and extending to Romance Europe and the Western cultural tradition as a whole.
From 2023, this project will expand to the classical sphere with the further convergence of the "Anthropology of the Ancient World" section, which until 2022 is part of the Doctorate in "Sciences of Antiquity and Archaeology" with administrative headquarters in Pisa.
