The Master's Degree in Physical Activity, Sport and Health Research proposed here is a transformation of an existing Master's degree at the Universidade de Vigo into an interuniversity Master's degree as a result of collaboration between the Universidade de Vigo and the University of A Coruña.

Justification of the relevance of the University Research Master's Degree.

In the Department of Special Didactics of the Universidade de Vigo there was a doctoral programme with the title Research in Special Didactics and Physical Education, partly as a continuation of this doctoral programme to implement a new doctoral programme called Physical Activity, Sport and Health which was, at that time, associated with the research master's degree.

The Master of Research in Physical Activity, Sport and Health completed the enrolment according to the legal regulations at the time, but there was a lower enrolment of students in the last three years. The requirements established in Decree 222/2011 of the Xunta de Galicia, specifically in article 6, which states that the minimum number of new students is 20, indicate that a strategic alliance between the Universidade de Vigo and the University of A Coruña for the development of this master's degree can guarantee annual enrolment and therefore the requirements of Decree 222/2011.

Social justification.

There is a need to train researchers in the field of physical activity, sport and the relationship with health for the following reasons:

There is an increase in the elderly population in Galicia. In 1013, 23.3% of the Galician population was over 64 years old and the demographic projections agree that Galician society will continue to grow older. In order to reduce the level of dependency and improve the quality of life of this segment of the population, it is necessary to train researchers in this field.

In Galicia the level of sedentary lifestyle of the population is increasing and as a consequence the levels of obesity and overweight, as well as an increase in the prevalence of pathologies associated with hypokinetic attitudes.

Galicia has a large number of Blue Flag beaches and many kilometres of coastline, as well as water facilities where the presence of lifeguards is necessary. It is necessary to train researchers in this field.

The practice of sporting physical activity is being extended to all population groups, as shown by the results of surveys on the sporting habits of the Spanish population.

Sport is possibly one of the most important social phenomena of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. It is therefore necessary to have a better knowledge of the socio-economic aspects and their repercussions on the organism. As well as the analysis of the technical-tactical aspects of sport.
