The Master's Degree in Statistical Techniques offers a broad, but at the same time compact, programme that provides a rigorous training in Statistics and Operations Research, enabling its graduates to meet the needs of today's society, either with a mainly applied and professional orientation, or with a more theoretical and academic orientation. Specifically, the proposed programme aims to provide:

  • Training of a scientific-technical nature in the field of Statistics and IO for students who may come from both degrees with basic training in Statistics and IO, as well as technical degrees, and which will allow them to develop an academic activity.
  • An applied and interdisciplinary training in the techniques of Statistics and Operations Research that are of value in professional practice and thus facilitate their access to and integration in the labour market.
  • Advanced training that enables interested students to embark on research tasks in the area of Statistics and Operations Research, or in other areas, and which may culminate in the preparation and defence of a doctoral thesis.

University graduates with a mastery of advanced techniques in Statistics and Operations Research are currently in great demand. Moreover, the expectations for the evolution of this demand are even more flattering in view of what is reflected in a multitude of reports from national and international institutions and consultancy firms that coincide in indicating that this demand will experience significant growth in the short term.

Professional opportunities:

The employability of MTE students is one of the strong points of this master's degree. The increased demand for technical profiles capable of carrying out descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analysis of the information generated by companies in different fields has resulted in job placement rates close to 100% in recent years. Many students start working even before finishing the MTE. During the 2017/2018 academic year, the Institute of Mathematics (IMAT) of the University of Mathematics (USC) carried out a survey on Satisfaction and Job Placement of USC mathematics graduates. This study included, in addition to the graduates of the Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, the graduates of the USC of the Master's Degrees taught in the Faculty of Mathematics. In this study, 100% of the MTE students who were included in the selected sample were employed at the time of the interview.

The large number of collaboration agreements of the MTE is also very positive for the employability of MTE graduates. It is increasingly common for students who carry out their TFM in the form of an internship in a company to join the company once they have finished their work.

Finally, taking 60 credits of the Master's Degree in Statistical Techniques qualifies students for the PhD in Statistics and Operations Research, an inter-university PhD programme organised by the Universities of A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.
