SDC courses taken during the freshman year reflect the desire to have a fully integrated foundation experience for all first year design students. Once students have completed this sequence they will be able to select the design discipline that they wish to apply for major certification in. Certification for all design disciplines will occur at the end of the first year prior to matriculating into second year. The Global History of Design sequence (SDC 250 and SDC 350) rounds out the required core curriculum shared by all design majors. The undergraduate program in interior design requires two study tours/travel engagement experiences for graduation (see Off-Campus Study and Study Tour Requirements PDF). Students are encouraged to participate in as many experiences as possible. Major Certification To be admitted to the major of interior design, a student should have completed at least 24 semester hours and the pre-ID curriculum. Students must submit a certification application in the spring semester of their first year. Application forms and instructions are available in the School of Design and Construction main office and on this website. Due to limitations of space, faculty, and budget, admission can be granted to only the most qualified students based on experience, demonstrated abilities, motivation, and academic performance. The faculty has identified seven critical outcomes essential for students to achieve the aforementioned goal. They will demonstrate the ability to: Define problems as it relates to the field of Interior Design. Understand the meaning and impact of design as it relates to human interaction, technology, theoretical frameworks, and interdisciplinary efforts. Evaluate, select, synthesize and apply information and research findings to design solutions. Interpret, evaluate and represent abstract concepts during all phases of the design process to indicate conditions, relationships, and requirements within the interior environment. Explore and generate creative solutions via a systematic and coordinated design process that integrates functional and aesthetic concerns. Convey intent in a professional manner appropriate to the audience. Understand that Interior Design contributes to the betterment of the human condition from the individual to the global community, and able to justify and defend design solutions as it relates to natural, social, and economic issues. Additional Strategic Goals: Provide a premier design education and transformative experiences that prepare students to excel in a global society Achieve global recognition in design innovation, discovery, and creativity Advance a culture of service and stewardship Foster an environment of diversity, integrity, and leadership. Interior designers work in a wide range of settings, both commercial and residential. A majority of interior designers practice at least part of the time in both the residential and commercial areas. Most commercial interior designers concentrate within design specialties, such as designing for the hospitality or health care industries. Some specialize further by designing restaurants, residential kitchens and baths, interiors for airplanes or yachts, or historic conservation or restoration.
