We prepare our students to be successful next-generation scientists and to develop the broader skills needed to excel in a career path of their choice; including the academic, industrial and regulatory sectors. The Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences program provides graduate training in cancer biology, drug discovery and translational pharmacology. The program includes faculty from the WSU College of Pharmacy located on the WSU Health Sciences campus in Spokane, Wash. Opportunities for financial support are available. Our program houses more than 25 graduate training faculties with active research projects supported by federal and private funding organizations. Our faculty use multi-disciplinary basic and translational approaches to: Understand mechanisms of disease; Identify novel therapeutic targets Develop novel treatments; Optimize therapeutic regimens. Course requirements are flexible and can be tailored to individual needs and career goals. Students may take courses offered at WSU Spokane, as well as WSU Pullman. Students actively participate in weekly research seminars with special emphasis on enhancing communication and leadership skills. To prepare graduates for careers as successful professionals in academia, industry, health care, and private institutions dedicated to the promotion of human health and wellness: Achieve mastery of knowledge in the general field of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Develop the expertise to use appropriate methodologies to solve novel and emerging problems related to the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Disseminate research findings to local, regional, national, and international audiences primarily through publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences. Participate in professional organizations, including becoming members, attending meetings, and taking leadership roles where appropriate. Participate in teaching, internships, fellowships, workshops, credentialing and grant applications to enhance competitiveness for career opportunities as appropriate. To prepare students to be effective and innovative researchers: Train students in critical, integrative, and evaluative thinking at the highest levels of rigor; Develop advanced written and oral communication skills; Become independent, self-motivated researchers with the ability to identify specific problems in their field of expertise and to formulate solutions to these problems; Develop a comprehensive knowledge of previous and current research in their field of expertise and be able to demonstrate that knowledge capability in a review of the literature at a level that is potentially publishable. Generate innovative questions within their field of expertise and pose hypotheses related to those questions; Apply sound methodological approaches to test hypotheses related to specific research questions and describe the methods effectively. Perform statistical analyses of research data and present the results in a way that clearly describes the data. To enhance visibility of the College of Pharmacy doctoral programs nationwide and internationally: Attract and retain high-quality graduate students; Provide effective mentoring that encourages students to graduate in a timely manner; Attract, retain, and support nationally- and internationally-recognized research-active faculty members who contribute to the College of Pharmacy Graduate program.

Admission Requirements

Prospective international students must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an approved institution. Usually this is a minimum of four years of study beyond grade 12. A grade point average equivalent to a U.S. grade of “B” or better is required. Other English Language Requirements: 550 paper-based (PBT) TOEFL, 213 computer-based (CBT) TOEFL, MELAB score of 77.
