Program Purpose: The goal of the M.S. program in Pharmacology and Toxicology is to prepare students to be technically and theoretically competent scientists who possess a broad knowledge of topics central to the discipline of Pharmacology and Toxicology and specific knowledge related to one particular topic in the discipline. Such individuals will then be positioned to contribute in academic, industrial, or government positions as trained researchers. Learning Outcomes: demonstrate broad, general knowledge in the basic biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences; demonstrate a general knowledge of modern technical approaches used in the discipline and have practical working knowledge of several of these different technical approaches; demonstrate in-depth knowledge about the theoretical basis behind their thesis research, the methodologies used, the results obtained, and the significance of the results; be able to apply critical thinking and analytical skills to formulate a technical critique and express that argument clearly and cogently both orally and in writing; be able to identify, compile, analyze, and assess technical, scientific and health-care related information from a variety of sources and perspectives; exhibit some problem-solving ability and be able to formulate hypothesis-driven projects in modern areas of drug discovery and development and translational biomedical research; demonstrate an understanding of most current methods of modern drug discovery, drug development, drug target characterization and validation, assay development, and biomaterial optimization; demonstrate a basic understanding of principles of experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of research results, and be able to critically evaluate published research results on the basis of these factors.
