Program Purpose: The purpose of the Health Promotion and Education masters program is to prepare graduate students to implement a variety of health programs in state and local health departments, schools, worksites, and other settings. The program can also serve as a springboard for advanced clinical or academic degrees. Students may choose one of two options: non-thesis and thesis. The nonthesis option focuses on applied health promotion interventions, and the thesis option emphasizes health educational research. Program goals center on six emphasis areas within the department: community health, body image and eating disorders, integrative health, international health, and emergency response. Learning Outcomes become skilled consumers of health literature and information and be able to discern positive lifestyle applications. demonstrate an understanding of program planning slalls such as conducting focus groups and needs assessments as part of health promotion and education program planning. become skilled in evaluating health education programs in a number of settings. demonstrate the use and customized applications of a wide variety of effective health teaching methods in different populations. possess a broad range of slalls in doing health promotion, policy formulation, and marketing of community health initiatives. be able to produce health promotion materials using media, technology, and policy. identify primary interventions that can prevent lifestyle diseases.
