Study Level

PHD

The Ph.D. graduate program in Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah builds on three pillars each representing one major goal and these three goals are; (1) Academic goal, (2) research goal and, (3) professional goal. The Academic Goal is to build, grow, and sustain a quality graduate program and facilitate innovative instruction that will be recognized for its excellence. The Research Goal is to increase graduate student enrollment and national recognition of our program through increased innovative research activities that provide additional funding opportunities. The Professional Advancement Goal provides professional exposure and training opportunities for graduate students to become engineering ambassadors in the practice of engineering. The purpose of our program is to integrate these three goals to educate engineers on how to “imagine, innovate, design and build” projects and to provide long-term solutions for both the developed and the developing world. Learning Outcomes Complete independent research and advance the state of knowledge in the field. This is demonstrated by publishing a minimum of three peer-reviewed publications in archival journal, or by preparing a Ph.D. dissertation. Demonstrate strong grounding in the fundamentals, thorough knowledge of the primary literature, and an ability to design, communicate and execute a novel research plan. Demonstrate the significance of his/her contributions to the field, and professionally communicate the results.
