Institute of Marine Sciences offers a four-year integrated B.Sc. (Honours) program in Marine Science. The program combines knowledge in the ocean and coastal environment, marine organisms, and their interactions as well as policy choices in ecosystem-based stewardship embedded in sustainable ocean and coastal resource management. In an academic year, forty students are enrolled in the entry level through competitive admission test. A total of 160 credits (i.e. sixty-five theoretical and practical courses) are assigned for B.Sc. (Hon’s) program that covers modules such as Marine & Estuarine Ecology, Marine Microbiology, Planktology, Biochemistry, Marine Invertebrates, Ichthyology & Systematics, Coastal & Marine Botany, Physical Oceanography, Chemical Oceanography, Geological Oceanography, Hydrography & Navigation, Biodiversity & Conservation, Aquaculture, Aquaculture Planning & Engineering, Seafood Processing Technology, Mathematics, Statistics, Marine Pollution, Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information System (GIS), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), Fluid Dynamics & Sediment Transport, Wetland & Lake Management, Marine Affairs, Meteorology & Ocean Forecasting, Mangrove Ecosystem & Management, Fisheries Resource Assessment & Management, Fish & Shellfish Health Management, Fish & Shellfish Nutrition, Fish Breeding & Genetics, Environmental Impact Assessment & Management, Fish Pharmacology, and Research Methodology. These interdisciplinary course curriculum prepares students to analyze critically issues such as environmental change, human impacts on the ocean, biodiversity conservation, fisheries development as well as to understand fundamental coastal and marine processes. Students gain knowledge from a mix of formal classes, laboratories and field trips, internships, and a variety of independent research opportunities, all under the guidance of diverse, nationally and internationally recognized IMS faculty members.
