About University of Chittagong

The University of Chittagong (CU) is located on 1,754 acres of beautiful hilly land in Mauja Fatehpur underHathazari upazila - about 22 km north of Chattogram - the second largest metropolitan city known as the port cityof Bangladesh. CU started its operation by appointing Professor A R Mallick (1918-97) as the project Director on 3December 1965. Subsequently, the Chittagong University Ordinance was promulgated on 25 September 1966.CU started its academic program on 28 November with only 200 Master course students in Bangla, English,History, and Economics departments under the Faculty of Arts. After a short while, Medical, Engineering, Law, andEducation Colleges outside the university campus were incorporated as separate faculties, and thus theuniversity's educational activities kept expanding. CU continuously grows in its quality teaching, in-depth research,and tangible infra-structural developments with commendable architectural designs. As one of the largest andoldest universities in Bangladesh, it comprises 54 departments/institutes under ten faculties - the Faculty of Artsand Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty ofLaw, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Marine Sciences andFisheries and Faculty of Medicine. There are also 25 allied colleges outside the campus. The university offerscertificate courses, diplomas, undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees. CU is unique in its campus setting - abiodiversity hot spot, an ecological niche full of greeneries that fosters a vibrant environment for curricular & extra-curricular activities. Currently, the university has more than 28,000 students and 1045 faculty members under tenfaculties hosting 54 Departments/ Institutes. Since its establishment, CU has been known for the excellence of itsteaching, research, and services to local, national, and international communities. It is one of the leadinguniversities in Bangladesh in terms of quality research conducted by the faculties and post-graduate students asevident from the increasing number of research publications in indexed journals. The students of CU win the toppositions at the national level in debate, sports, computer programming, engineering designs, and competition forbusiness ideas. It is also the proud home to fine student-athletes, where performers win medals at national andinternational multi-sport events. This university is committed to making significant contributions to Bangladesh'ssocial, economic, and environmental sustainability and working in collaboration and partnership with communities,government, industries, and alumni nationally and globally.
