The Department of Law was established in 1992, under the umbrella of the Faculty of Law. Within a few years of establishment, it had earned a reputation for its academic excellence. In total, 130 students are enrolled each year at first-year LL.B. (Hons.) through a highly competitive admission test conducted by the Faculty of Law. Year-wise the total number of students in LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M. programme is above 600.
The Chittagong University Faculty of Law offers some unique opportunities for students such as clinical legal education, more legal practice-oriented subjects in the curriculum and two full compulsory courses on the English language. A new syllabus was introduced by the Department of Law 2008 session for the students of the LL.B. (Honors) program and LL.M. programme. The new syllabus introduced new subjects to cope with the changing needs of the time and the marks for the courses offered have been increased from 2200 to 3400 for the LL.B. (Hons.) programme and 500 to 800 for the LL.M. programme
Currently, the Faculty of Law has a new and its own building which has been constructed by the A. K. Khan Foundation. The building named as ‘A. K. Khan Law Building’ has significantly increased physical facilities including classrooms, moot-court room, seminar library, teachers’ room, cafeteria, teachers and students’ common room, alumni room and auditorium, which is expected to contribute in enhancing the quality of legal education imparted by the Department of Law.
