The postgraduate degree in Materials Science is within an interdisciplinary field that studies the properties of solid materials and how these properties are related to the composition and structure of a material, that is, Materials Science involves relating the desired properties and the performance and/or behavior of a material in a given application with the structure of atoms and phases in that material through its study and characterization.

This branch of science arose from an amalgamation of solid state physics, metallurgy, and chemistry, among others, since the wide variety of properties that materials possess cannot be understood within the context of a single discipline. One of its main objectives is to understand materials in a fundamental way, in order to be able to create new materials with the desired properties.

Materials Science also involves developing new materials and designing processes to manufacture them. Thus, Materials Science is useful for the implementation of the developments proposed in various areas of engineering, such as: computing, advanced materials, lightweight composite materials for faster vehicles, optical fibers for telecommunications, silicon microchips for the technology revolution. information, quantum, medical technologies such as bone replacement materials, nanotechnology, the automotive industry, aeronautics, fusion and nuclear energy, electronics, aerospace, telecommunications, information processing, and energy conversion.
