The doctoral degree program in conducting emphasizes the development of the full range of capabilities for leading ensembles at the highest musical levels. Graduate will be able to conceptualize and realize artistic aspirations for the performance of musical works. Competencies include advanced knowledge and skills in musicianship, theoretical and historical analysis, repertory, rehearsal technique, performance practices, and languages (source: NASM Handbook, p. 112). Students graduating with a DMA degree will complete significant coursework (12 credits hours) to prepare them for instructional competencies in a related field in music. Doctoral students are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average. A grade of “B-” or better is required for all music courses. Learning Outcomes Students will demonstrate excellence in ensemble conducting at a professional level in order to work as conductors in academia and professional arts organizations. Students will demonstrate advanced knowledge in ensemble literature, music theory, music history, performance practice and pedagogy to provide a depth of knowledge for a professional career as a conductor. Students will demonstrate skills in ensemble building, programming, and arts management to facilitate success as an artistic director and conductor. Students will demonstrate superior skills as conductors for choral and/or instrumental ensembles at a professional level. Students will demonstrate advanced knowledge in ensemble literature and programming, music theory, music history, performances practice, choral diction or instrumental techniques, and pedagogy to provide a depth of knowledge for a professional career as a conductor. Students will demonstrate advanced musical and pedagogical knowledge and research/writing skills necessary to function effectively as professional performers and university level teachers.
