Program Purpose The Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics is an interdisciplinary program providing a solid mathematical background while allowing exploration of other disciplines where Mathematics plays a fundamental role. The program is designed so that students can take electives from other departments, so that the major is more accessible to students in other disciplines. The coursework prepares students for postgraduate study or employment in a variety of professions requiring the ability to analyze problems with or without the help of a computer. Students pursuing the B.S. in Applied Mathematics are prepared to work in research, education, government, business or industry. Learning Outcomes Students will develop facility with and the ability to apply the concepts of differential, integral, and multivariable calculus. Students will develop facility with and the ability to apply the concepts of Euclidean vector spaces and matrices and ordinary differential equations. Students will be able to comprehend and construct logical, quantitatively and grammatically correct mathematical proofs. Students will be able to analyze and understand quantitative problems which arise in applications. Students will develop facility in and the ability to apply basic computer programming and statistics skills. Students will be able to use mathematics to solve interdisciplinary problems. Students will be able to present and defend mathematical arguments, and to work individually as well as interactively in group situations, using oral, written, and graphic forms.
