Program Purpose: The program prepares students for careers in hospitality management, sustainable tourism, natural resource recreation planning and management, community recreation and sport management, adventure and outdoor programming, and therapeutic recreation. Learning Outcomes Conceptual Foundations: Demonstrate knowledge of and interest in current trends and issues within and affecting the field of PRT. Define the role of various local, state, and federal governments in the delivery of recreation and leisure services. Communicate the theoretical, philosophical, and historical roots of PRT. Explain the role of recreation in today's economy. Professional Preparedness: Communicate their personal strengths and limitations as they relate to prospective work settings. Create a professional cover letter and resume. Program Evaluation: Recognize assumptions and procedures associated with statistical sampling. Calculate, interpret, and report essential descriptive statistics. Compile and interpret qualitative data. Construct and interpret visual displays of data. Design contextual and reductionistic evaluation projects. Identify and apply quantitative models to facilitate managerial decision making. Program Planning and Leadership: Create an overall program planning portfolio that uses an array of involvement levels and activities from a range of program areas. Identify and create recreational opportunities using diverse resources for leisure experiences. Demonstrate essential leadership skills and techniques. Gain insight into one's own leadership style and construct a personal philosophy of leadership. Administration/Management: Explain the role of marketing in PRT. Distinguish marketing from sales. Assess and describe an organization's marketing situation. Understand and fully explain the various components of the marketing mix. Complete a marketing plan for an organization. Perform a marketing role for an organization. Demonstrate an ability to locate and identify both traditional and alternative funding sources for public, private, and non-profit recreation agencies. Distinguish various pricing strategies and appropriate settings for their use. Apply various budgeting techniques. Utilize computer software for financial planning and assessment. Articulate the components of liability and defenses against it. Discuss types of insurance and bankruptcy. Explain and justify various revenue and expenditure and management techniques. Identify the roles of human relations and the government in financial managment. Diversity Aspects: Explain theories related to non-dominant groups or segments of the population. Identify sources for getting information on disabilities, people with disabilities, and social handicapping situations. Report on information form diversity visitation experiences. Use correct terminology to discuss concepts of leisure, play, and recreation among diverse populations. Recognize the significance of the psychological, sociological, and physiological significance of play, recreation, and leisure for all populations in a variety of settings. Examine the significance of the human life cycle as it relates to leisure and leisure behavior. Field Experiences: Obtaining formal field experience(s) totaling at least 100 hours in an appropriate professional recreation organization prior to internship.
