French is an official language in 33 countries around the world and it is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. It is an official language of the United Nations and many international organizations. 56 countries are members of the International Organization of La Francophonie. French is the mother tongue of approximately 7 million Canadians (22.7% of the population), while about 5 million consider themselves bilingual in French and English. Ontario’s Francophone population numbers approximately 550,000 people. The French Section of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Brock University is interested in all the diverse aspects of the Francophone world. French language cultural activities are available through the Club de français.
