In this advanced master's programme, students will learn how both operational and maintenance processes can be optimised by making them ‘smart’, using new (I4.0) technologies, such as robotics, big data analytics, digital twins, cloud computing, etc.
About the programme
The programme covers technologies that facilitate an advanced digitalisation of product and process information (e.g., smart sensors), technologies that are used in production and maintenance (e.g., cobots), and technologies that connect production equipment/ assets and people (e.g., Industrial IoT platforms).
Students will be equipped both with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific techn(olog)ical knowledge in the – interdisciplinary – field of Smart O&M and with the ability to apply this knowledge in a real industrial setting, from a system approach. The master’s programme delivers ‘smart operations and maintenance specialists’, capable of implementing and deploying innovative technologies with a real added value for the industry. This programme is jointly organised by KU Leuven and Ghent University.
Programme structure
The compulsory part consists of four technical courses, a ‘managerial’ course (of 6 ECTS each), and a master’s thesis (18 ECTS).
Through three elective tracks (of 12 ECTS each), students are able to further craft their profiles according to their personal interests or needs. Each track consists of three ‘fixed’ courses of 4 ECTS credits.
Career perspectives
Graduates are qualified to take up different roles in later practice, in different (industrial) sectors. The skills developed, and the knowledge obtained will be more widely applicable than in the manu facturing industry alone. All ‘operationally intensive’ sectors, including for example the food and pharmaceutical sector, are relevant, ranging from specialised SMEs to international Captains of Industry.
Moreover, Smart O&M specialists can add value to any relevant company regardless of their degree of ‘innovation adoption’. They can be leading-edge technology suppliers and ‘lead plants’ as well as companies belonging to ‘the early majority’. Many 'traditional' service providers are also forced to transform under the influence of I4.0 and can benefit from Smart O&M expertise.
There are ample national and international job opportunities for MSc Smart O&M graduates, but narrowed down, three essential job profiles can be identified, which are reflected in the programme’s structure (cf. three elective tracks): job profiles in an industrial R&D team (the machine track), job profiles in a production engineering department (the factory track), and job profiles in production operations (the operations track).
