The Master of Arts in Reading (RDNG) program provides candidates with a solid theoretical foundation in reading and literacy and skills needed to address the needs of K-12 learners, particularly those who require specialized literacy intervention. Candidates gain knowledge of a wide range of instructional and assessment policies, programs, practices, and resources supporting literacy development. Candidates will design literacy environments that engage learners in inquiry, research, and communication, using print and online texts and new and emerging technologies. Finally, candidates gain knowledge and expertise to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse K-12 settings.

Career Opportunities
For candidates who hold a current Michigan Teaching Certificate, the Master of Arts in Reading leads to the Reading Specialist (BR), a K-12 endorsement from the State of Michigan. Students must complete all required courses in the program and successfully pass the Michigan State Endorsement Test (#092) to gain the endorsement as a Reading Specialist. The Master of Arts in Reading and the State of Michigan endorsement as a K-12 Reading Specialist can lead to a position as a building or district literacy curriculum/reading specialist, literacy coach, or reading teacher for struggling readers.

Accreditation
The EMU College of Education is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation, approved by the Michigan Department of Education to prepare educational personnel, and nationally recognized by the International Reading Association.

Conceptual Framework
Eastern Michigan University’s advanced professional education program promotes inquiry, advocacy, and leadership education for a diverse and democratic society.

Program Offerings
The Master of Arts in Reading is offered Fully Online. As in all Master’s Programs, the candidate has six years to complete the Program of Study.

Online Education Eligibility

  • The U.S. Federal Government limits the number of online courses international students may enroll in while living in the United States. For this reason, we cannot admit students on F1 visas to fully online programs. Please check with  International Admissions  to confirm eligibility before applying.
  • All applicants, please review  Online Education for Out-of-State Students  to confirm you are eligible to enroll in an online program based in Michigan.
