Environmental & Sustainability Studies (ENS) is an interdisciplinary field that explores and seeks to understand the relationships that exist between humans and the natural world. The study utilizes information from disciplinary subjects in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences and policy. ENS recognizes that no activity is ever conducted in isolation, whether in a career or in daily life. There are continuous, critical, synergistic connections between earthâ€™s living and inanimate objects. These connections must be understood and respected if humans are to live sustainability in a world with finite, limited resources. Careers Grow Your Future The ENS B.A. degree will provide graduating students with a broad liberal-arts education in environmental studies within the context of sustainability. The ENS B.A. was designed to be compatible with disciplinary subjects so students can obtain another major or minor with the ENS B.A. ENS students will obtain the fundamental knowledge required to understand the relationships that exist between the global economy, societal problems and needs, and the natural world. The program will develop the critical thinking, communication, and independent study skills necessary for students to pursue lifestyles and careers that are ecologically viable, socially desirable, and economically feasible. ENS students will be uniquely prepared to participate in the rapidly expanding â€œGreen Economyâ€, in world where every job will eventually, out of necessity, become a â€œgreen jobâ€. Specific areas of employment include city, state and federal environmental agencies, non-governmental agencies (NGOs), education (with appropriate training), and many other fields depending on the students interests Career opportunities in Environmental and Sustainability Studies Environmental non-profit organization Environmental protection agencies State and federal research foundations Green entrepreneurs Business managers Newspapers and magazines Environmental justice Communication specialist Sustainability management Environmental economist Parks and recreation management Environmental historian Community organizing and fundraising Urban, regional planning Waste management and mitigation Implementing sustainability in traditional fields What You'll Study The Environmental and Sustainability Studies major educates students in a broad range of fundamental environmental studies subjects with concepts of sustainability integrated throughout the curriculum. Majors will combine the fundamental knowledge they obtain in three areas -- economics, environment, and society -- to develop an understanding of sustainability and how sustainable practices can be implemented. This is an ideal double major for other disciplinary degrees.
