Business Administration PhD Accounting Concentration Description The Von Allmen School of Accountancy doctoral program is designed to equip doctoral graduates for successful careers as educators and researchers at major colleges and universities. Doctoral training typically requires five years. In addition to formal doctoral-level coursework and dissertation development, the training also gives students first-hand experiences as researchers and college teachers. The Ph.D. program offers a close mentoring relationship with faculty members. First- and second-year papers are completed under the mentorship of a faculty member. Students and faculty members also often meet weekly in informal brown-bag lunches to discuss research, teaching, and academic life. Leading accounting academics from well-known schools present and discuss their research at weekly workshops. These scholars also meet with doctoral students to offer advice and information. University of Kentucky faculty members and doctoral students also present their research at these workshops. Doctoral education places great emphasis on self-directed learning and close relationships with faculty in a specialization of joint interest to the faculty and doctoral student. The program typically takes five years to complete and involves intense reading of academic journal articles and writing of original research. Doctoral students often forge close relationships with faculty mentors. These mentors work closely with the student to define a course of study, help them prepare for qualifying examinations, provide guidance in the dissertation process, and assist with finding their first faculty position.
