The “ Acting and directing ” course run by PSL University and the National Higher Conservatory of Dramatic Art was created in 2015 in order to offer acting students a specific course dedicated to questions of directing and writing. This 2nd cycle training is based on the skills acquired by students, guaranteeing a sensitive knowledge of stage issues. It seems fundamental to offer training in directing which starts from the performance of the actress and the actor, from their intimate knowledge of the set, the texts, their relationship to the body, to meaning and to emotion, of its concern for the public, of its own intelligence, to broaden it to all the components which constitute the theater.

The “Playing and directing” course has the dual ambition of developing training for students in a research situation, and to arm them in a solid and pragmatic way for the construction of their professional artistic career, taking into account all aspects of the profession of the theater artist and the evolution of practical, without favoring a chapel. The educational dynamic is built around an organization of practical and theoretical courses, mainly during the first year, to move towards a growing role for autonomy and research. In the 2nd year, the students' course includes immersion internships in a professional environment and partner schools, in France and abroad, the writing and defense of a research dissertation, and the completion of an end-of-studies project. These creations are presented at the Conservatory during the “Playing and staging” festival.

Until now, the 1st year of the “Playing and staging” training takes place simultaneously with the 3rd year of training for actresses and actors, continues as part of a 4th year of training and leads to the delivery of the CNSAD – PSL establishment diploma “Playing and directing”. Validation of the “Playing and directing” course at the master’s level is underway. From the start of the 2024/2025 academic year, the training will become the “Acting and directing” master's degree and will result, at the end of the two years of training (M1/M2), in the delivery of an establishment diploma conferring master's degree. The two years of the course will be unrelated to the training of the actress and actor. Recruitment will be open to applications coming from an establishment other than the CNSAD-PSL. Candidates for the master’s degree in “Playing and Directing” must hold the DNSPC or an equivalent diploma and a license or its equivalence.
