The department was opened in the year 1428 AH for the purpose of achieving several goals, including providing academic programs that provide the community with academically and professionally qualified graduates in the field of information systems, implementing scientific research related to information systems for the development and economic development of the community, in addition to active participation in serving the community and meeting its needs. In fields related to information systems. Information systems are considered a scientific field of study that includes strategic and operational strategies and activities that are used to collect, process, store, distribute and use information, knowledge and related technologies in institutions and society.

A graduate of the information systems program is primarily interested in the information provided by the computer to help institutions and organizations define and achieve their goals and the treatments that institutions implement using information technology. The specialist in information systems often works in large institutions and works on large and complex information systems. They understand the technical and institutional factors and are able to help organizations determine how to extend information and the processes based on it to deliver superior advantages for organizations. The graduate will also be able to identify institutions’ requirements for information systems and develop, design, and implement their specifications.
The department's vision aspires to be a distinguished department internationally in the field of information systems through academic programs, scientific research, and community service.
