The root of the Geography Department can be dated back to 1946 when a Geography and History Department was pioneered in Taiwan. With the educational need for specialization in 1962, an independent Department of Geography was formed. Being the largest geography department of Taiwan, both in terms of faculty and student enrollment, the department currently has undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. The Department faculty specialize in various sub-fields and collaborate well for an integral academic development. Four sub-fields of geography are focal and manifest through the department’s course structure. They are (1) Program for Training Geographic Educators, (2) Regional Studies, Tourism and Planning Program, (3) environmental monitoring and disaster management and (4) geographical information science.

The Department has a faculty of 24 and 10 adjunct professors, covering most sub-fields of geography. Each of the faculty excels in their area and devotes themselves into teaching, research and professional services. Emphasizing good geographic knowledge, analytical and assessment skills and spatial skills, and experienced in analyzing real cases and theoretical discourse, the faculty are able to prepare students for various applications and professional development. Such achievement is partly sustained by well facilitated labs. They are Climatology Lab, Geographic Imaging Lab, Geomorphology Lab, Hydrology Lab, and Computer Lab with ample professional software and PCI Remote sensing software.

The department has a long history of leading geographic field in many aspects. Publishing major geographic journal (Journal of Geographical Research) and NTNU geographic research monographs, convening international conference (NTNU International Geographic Conference) and having most alumni are just some examples. The department’s long history and reputation has been sustained by its faculty’s endeavors and devotion. We consciously strive to sustain the idea of geography as a field of tomorrow. Carrying the robust tradition established by the efforts of previous geographers, the department aims at (1) conducting innovative and practical curriculum; (2) providing services to enhance geographic education for environmental awareness, (3) enhancing critical thinking and maintaining humanistic consideration for societal betterment, and (4) enriching a society of sustainable development with environmental integrity. We work continually to broaden students’ horizon of geographic knowledge and skills through intensive and extensive training. We welcome students, who are enthusiastic about life, caring for others and environment, curious in exploring the world, and brave to thinking critically, to join us.
