The Department of Computer Science was established by the thirty-eighth session of the higher education council on 3/7/2005, as one of the departments of The College of Computer Engineering and Sciences (CCES)/Al-Kharj branch of King Saud University. Study then began in the department at the beginning of the second semester of the academic year, 2006/2007. The department offers a computer science program. Students who satisfy the requirements of the program are awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science with a view to preparing to be part of a highly competent, creative workforce in the field of computer science.
The CCES, in the midst of the first semester of the academic year 2009/2010, was merged with Al-Kharj University when the royal decree number 7305/MB dated 24/9/2009 was issued, ordering to establish Al-Kharj University and bring all colleges in the southern Riyadh under one independent university; namely, Al-Kharj University, which was later named Salman bin Abdulaziz University, based on the further royal decree number 45388 on 10/09/2011. Another royal decree was issued on 01/03/2015 to change its name to become Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University (PSAU).
The Department of Computer Science has committed, since its establishment, to consolidate scientific knowledge and practical experience in the field of computer science through a comprehensive updating of all course content to reflect the current situation in the field of computer science, and enable students to keep pace with the latest and rapid developments witnessed in this area.
The Curriculum of CS has been updated several times. The last was approved by the Departmental Council in its twelfth session, dated 05-6-2013, and by the college Council in its sixteenth session, dated 06-7-2013.
The curriculum of the computer science program is structured into 134 credit-hours, spanning over a period of eight semesters. The curriculum is structured in terms of successive levels of semesters so that the student knowledge and understanding of computer science is increased each semester.
