About the programmes
The Doctoral School of Literary Studies offers a number of 4-year programmes for international students, including Comparative Literature, English and American Literature, French Literature, German Literature, Italian Literature, Russian Literature, Classical Philology, and Neo-Latin Literature. These programmes combine the history and theories of literature with relevant artistic and medial examples, as well as social and cultural perspectives. Except for specific national programmes (in French, German, Russian, and Italian literature), all programmes are in English. Students participate in workshop seminars, acquire professional skills in analysis and composition, and receive individual guidance throughout their research work, up until the completion of their dissertations.

Holders of a PhD in Literary Studies may pursue a career in academia and education, or may choose to work for cultural organizations, publishing and media companies, national or local administration, or in the creative industry.

Who should apply?

We expect applicants to be interested in the contemporary developments and challenges in literature and culture, literary and cultural heritage worldwide, and languages in general. It is an advantage if the applicant has an MA in literary studies, languages, philosophy, cultural studies, theatre or film studies, or translation.


Application requirements: MA degree, a demonstrated proficiency in English (B2/Intermediate) and/or other languages as required by the specific programmes. In the final phase of the application process, applicants present their research plan and motivation in a personal or online interview.
