The importance of understanding the governments and political structure of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Central Europe is readily apparent by observing the role they play in current events. In addition, their rich cultures and traditions are subjects of great value. The Russians and Central Europeans have made major contributions to the world's literature, arts and sciences. The goals of the Russian and Central European studies major are to promote the study of Russia, the CIS, and Central Europe within an integrated interdisciplinary framework, and to build better understanding of the societies and cultures of Central Europe and the CIS through the exchange of students, faculty and publications.
