The Geoenergy programme includes a range of resource-related themes, including Petroleum, Unconventional Hydrocarbons, Geothermal, Clean Coal, Resources from Waste, Carbon Capture & Storage, Water & Mineral Resources. The programme is unique in offering a research-focused masters with some taught and training components supported by the Durham Energy Institute (DEI) and MSc in Energy & Society (L6K807, Department of Anthropology). Training in this field could lead to job opportunities within the energy industry or with regulatory bodies and consultancies.

Postgraduate students are at the heart of the Department's research activities. Our community has >60 students from countries around the world. All students are supervised by at least two members of academic staff and encouraged to present and promote their research at international conferences and by publication in leading scientific journals.

We are living through a time of unprecedented change on Earth. Scientific understanding of Geological Hazards, Sustainability, Infrastructure, Climate Change, Energy and Natural Resources has never been so important and Earth Sciences sit at the heart of the debate.

We aspire to help shape the future by providing the highest quality education for our students and by undertaking research that is both intrinsically excellent and relevant to society.

Our graduates have gone on to a range of exciting and fulfilling careers in sectors such as environmental agencies and consulting companies, industry, scientific journal editorial roles, teaching roles and further academic research. Supervisors and Department mentors provide support and advice about further career steps. Durham University also has a dedicated Careers Centre that provides support for postgraduates in their final year in considering options for the next stage of their career.
