The Department of Psychology's 70 members of academic staff consistently produce and publish high impact research spanning all subdisciplines of Psychology. We provide a world-class research environment for postgraduate students across a huge variety of specialisms. Much of our research is interdisciplinary both within the Department and outside of the Department, having published with co-authors in 43 countries across 6 continents since 2014.

We will ensure members of the Department of Psychology are appropriately resourced and supported in terms of time, training and facilities, to achieve their goals and those of our vision, by producing world-class outputs, becoming world leaders in their fields, driving the narrative of research enquiry, affecting behaviour change through their research, achieving significant funding and raising the profile of the Department nationally and internationally.

The Department of Psychology offers 3 to 3.5-year PhD funding schemes and 1-year Masters by Research degrees (full-time or part-time). These research degrees offer the unique opportunity to tackle research questions at the forefront of Psychological Science.

Students will be supervised by world-leading experts in their field of study and will be part of a thriving community of researchers within the Department. Students are active members of their Research Groups and benefit from a large range of opportunities to present and discuss work with their colleagues in seminars and research workshops.

Research degrees are examined by writing a thesis and in the case of a PhD, students undertake a viva (oral) examination. In addition to research work, students have the opportunity to undertake some teaching in order to gain valuable teaching experience. The University also offers a wide range of training and personal development courses. Students who are interested in undertaking post-graduate research are encouraged to approach members of staff within their field of interest to discuss and to develop potential research projects suitable for PhD or Masters by Research degrees.

Research Groups

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Developmental Science
  • Quantitative Social Psychology

Many of our graduates go on to successful careers both inside and outside of Psychology. Our graduates have gone on to enjoy careers in areas such as Clinical Psychology, Human Resources, Law (via conversion course), Marketing Analysis, Speech & Language Therapy (via conversion course) and Teaching (PGCE Primary or Secondary).
