This program is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC), Environmental Health and Safety is an interdisciplinary major that prepares students through academic coursework, laboratory and internship experiences for a career as an environmental health officer. Graduates of this program will work to ensure public health and safety in a variety of domestic and international roles. The required courses have been selected to develop students' critical thinking, life-long learning, and problem solving skills. Graduates of the program will diagnose and investigate health problems and hazards in the community, enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety, monitor the health status of communities, and evaluate effectiveness and quality of environmental community services. The work areas are diverse and include: epidemiological surveillance, disease prevention, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, food safety, water quality, recreational safety, injury prevention and education, and emergency preparedness. Environmental health officers protect the public from environmental threats and help communities recover from natural disasters.
