The goal of the Biology major is to provide students with the information and skills necessary to function in jobs or to obtain the undergraduate background necessary for more advanced training and education at the graduate level. In either case, the purpose is employment in a biologically oriented field or the professions. Career Opportunities Biology graduates are employed as laboratory technicians, product analysts, quality control technicians, and forensic scientists. Others are in research, teaching, or have gone on to graduate or medical schools. Program Objectives: To demonstrate knowledge of basic structure and functioning of cells. To understand the basic features of the synthetic theory of evolution. To understand basic ecological principles. To understand the principles and mathematical analysis of Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance. To understand the structure and function of nucleic acids and molecular controls. To understand the structures and functions of animals. To understand the structure and physiology of plants. To achieve additional understanding in population biology, organismic biology, or cellular and molecular biology. To develop quantitative problem solving skills and data analysis.
