About Western Mindanao State University

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) was founded in 1987 with a mission to "...serve as an instrument for the promotion of socio-economic advancement of the various cultural communities inhabiting therein." 

It was created with the aim of democratising education in the surrounding area and ensuring that everyone in the community had access to a quality education. It believes that education can be a vehicle for social and economic change and aims to increase local prosperity through its services. It offers courses in a wide range of subjects, from science and technology to arts and humanities and aims to produce graduates who go on to be world-class professionals in their fields.

The university is located in Zamboanga City, the third-largest city in the Philippines found on the South-Western coast. Zamboanga is known for its beauty and is often referred to as ‘Cuidad de Flores’ (City of Flowers) with its name being derived from the Malay world ‘flower garden.’ It boasts a lively fishing port as well as shopping centres and beautiful beaches. One beach that is particularly famous is the pink sand beach of Santa Cruz which was recognised by the National Geographic as one of the ‘World’s 21 best beaches’ in 2018.

University information

New students can apply to Western Mindanao State University by completing an entrance test followed by an interview and submitting all necessary documents to the College for Admission. They will then be asked to complete an admissions form and subsequently an enrolment form which must be returned to the office after paying the university fees. Students will then be able to confirm their enrolment and register themselves onto the appropriate classes. 
To enrol onto a course at Western Mindanao State University, students will need to produce the following documents to the College for Admission office: 
 

  • A NSO certified birth certificate (the original and two photocopies)
  • Their college entrance test results (the original document and one photocopy)
  • Form 138 – their high school report card (the original and one photocopy)
  • A medical certificate of physical health (the original and one photocopy)
  • A certificate of good moral character (the original and one photocopy)
  • College admission evaluation or interview form (the original and one photocopy)
  • Their parent(s)/ guardian(s) income tax return or a certificate of indigency

Student life

While studying at Western Mindanao State University, students can expect to receive an excellent research-led education that identifies reasons for national, international, and academic problems as well as focusing on the creation of a solution. They can also expect to frequently interact with the community surrounding the university, working with a diverse group of people with a variety of different backgrounds in order to apply their knowledge to the real world and make a difference in the lives of others. 
As part of their environmental sustainability policy, Western Mindanao State University makes four pledges to limit their contribution to the issue of climate change: 
 

  • Energy conservation – promoting awareness to staff and students on the importance of conserving energy as well as adopting energy efficient technology across their campuses and increasing the use of renewable electricity.
  • Waste management – advocating for general waste reduction and implementing recycling and composting.
  • Water usage – regularly assessing water consumption and strategising to reduce whenever possible as well as investing in water-saving technologies.
  • Transportation policy – prioritising full vehicle capacity when scheduling trips and advocating the importance of reduced fuel consumption to staff and students. 


In order to ensure the mental wellbeing of their students, Western Mindanao State University offer guidance counsellors to ensure that any student who may be struggling or have questions regarding their future career has the right advice.

FAQs

Course prices vary depending on the level of study, whether the student is new or returning and sometimes what subject they are studying. 
The price for a new undergraduate student is 30.00 PhP with an additional 150.00 PhP registration fee. 
The price for a returning undergraduate student varies from 17.00 to 48.00 PhP. 
The price for a graduate student (master’s) is 220.00 PhP with an additional 50.00 PhP registration fee. 
The price for a graduate student (doctorate) is 350.00 PhP with an additional 50.00 PhP registration fee.

Western Mindanao State University was originally founded as a teacher training school in 1918 after the Spanish-Filipino war and offers a broad range of teaching related courses however, since becoming a university in 1987, it has expanded its curriculum greatly and now offers a variety of exciting courses in many different subject areas.
