The MA in English Studies offers students the opportunity to focus on the areas of English literary studies that interest them the most, with modules covering literature and language from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day. Students can choose to study literature before 1800, as well as selecting from specialist modules in Victorian literature, Modern literature, creative writing and linguistics. This course will be taught in small seminar groups of about 12, an ideal size for detailed discussion of texts. Assessment on a module usually consists of one or two pieces of written work. Common types include essays in response to a choice from set questions, editorial exercises, critical reviews of recent work in a field, and, on certain option modules, creative writing. Some modules also feature an assessed oral presentation.
