KU offers a comprehensive graduate program in Spanish language, literature, and cultures. The major emphasis of teaching and research is literature and cultural studies; however, the department also offers courses in literary theory, Portuguese language, and Brazilian literature. Our faculty is dynamic, professionally active, and committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching. We offer flexibility in the choice of fields, which are defined both by traditional geographical and chronological parameters and by thematic topics. Our students are a diverse group, and we encourage applicants from traditional and nontraditional backgrounds. Teaching assistantships are available to qualified graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in Spanish. Stipends are competitive. Appointments are half-time for the academic year. University fellowships are available for outstanding students. The department offers three study abroad programs for language immersion in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Barcelona, Spain; and Salvador, Brazil.

Regular admission requires a bachelor's degree and a grade-point average of at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) from KU, regionally accredited institution, or foreign university with substantially equivalent bachelor's degree requirements. The bachelor's degree is not acceptable if it contains credit awarded for work experience that was not directly supervised by faculty members of an accredited university or not evaluated in units that identify the academic content. Other English Language Requirements: TOEFL (paper) all part scores at least 53.
