In the Spanish teaching major, you'll receive solid teacher preparation through our award-winning Department of Teacher Education. Along with gaining valuable language skills and knowledge of cultures and philosophies from Spanish-speaking regions around the world, you'll gain the tools necessary to connect with students and motivate them to learn the language. To be eligible for a middle/high school teaching license, you must take at least 36 credit hours of applied language courses, in addition to education courses. The program can be completed in four years, and your academic advisors will help you make sure you're staying on track. Potential careers for Spanish Teaching majors: Middle school/junior high teacher: In some schools, foreign languages are taught in middle school, so if you are interested in teaching younger students, this may be your best option. High school teacher: Modern languages are taught in high schools all across the U.S., which means there are jobs out there for those with degrees in modern language education. School administrator: After you teach for a while, you may decide that you would like to help run a school as either a principal, superintendent, or an athletic director. Guidance counselor: With a little more schoolwork, you could become a guidance counselor and help students prepare for college, advocate for students, counsel students, and help students plan their coursework. Teaching abroad: Whether you are teaching your second language or English, having a working understanding of a modern language will help you find a teaching position abroad.
